Timeless Inspiration,
Beyond the Museum

ANCIENT EGYPT

Parade to Osiris.

The ancient painting portrays figures in profile, their slender bodies, triangular torso, and sloping shoulders outlined in black. Hieroglyphics border the top and bottom with prayers to Osiris. Bright paints of blue, yellow and green enliven the jackal-headed god Anubis, the ibis-headed scribe Thoth, and Pharaoh seated on his throne. The stylized figures and symbols capture key features of Egyptian art and beliefs.

SURREALISM

Salvador Dali Revival.

Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory and The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory feature his iconic melting clocks draped over barren landscapes. These limp watches reject the rigidity of time and instead embrace the fluidity between dreams and reality that was central to the surrealist movement. Dali frequently incorporated melting clocks as a symbol of the relativity of space and time. These juxtapositions of everyday objects in unfamiliar, dreamlike contexts were meant to jolt the viewer and encourage them to see things in new, nonlinear ways.

Later in life, Dali painted The Sacrament of the Last Supper, combining the traditional biblical scene with surrealist elements like levitation and unusual perspectives. Having rediscovered Catholicism later in his life, Dali was commissioned to put his surrealist spin on this classic religious subject. The resulting painting features distorted geometric shapes that impose an otherworldly feel to the sacred event. This late-career painting synthesizes core themes of religion, spirituality, and surrealism.
